Materials for consulting teachers:
- Are based upon a collaborative
consulting approach where the itinerant teachers serve as consultants
for childcare providers who have a child with a disability in their
care.
- Include strategies and
modifications to accommodate the needs of children with disabilities.
Tools for Traveling Teachers: These
are two-page handouts designed to be used collaboratively during direct
consultation between the consulting/itinerant teacher and the childcare
provider. Each handout contains information and strategies that can
be used in inclusive settings by childcare providers to facilitate
early language and literacy skills with children with disabilities.
Handouts also include guiding questions to help childcare providers
problem-solve, plan modifications, and identify scaffolding strategies
together with the consulting/itinerant teacher.
Classroom
Print Materials: These are materials with simple strategies for childcare
providers to use directly or to share with families and
caregivers, for example, mini-posters to place in activity areas, bookmarks,
and magnets.
Preschool
Checklist: This is a simple checklist for use by the consulting/itinerant
teacher to monitor children's progress on early literacy skills. Areas
and items are cross-referenced with the topics covered in the handouts.
These include: knowledge about books; interest and knowledge about stories;
functions of print and pre-writing skills; and phonological awareness.
